Kingwood teen with Fragile X improves through personalized workout plan Leave a comment

Caroline Bridges has lived with Fragile X Syndrome her whole life.

Then one day in 2018, she took her first class at Orange Theory Fitness in Kingwood, and the increased focus on exercise helped change her life.

Bridges had only ever faced the challenges the condition brings to her body and mind, but after implementing a personalized exercise plan, she has been able to not only become physically stronger but has started to see improvement in her memory, learning and speech that are impacted by the Fragile X Syndrome.

Regular exercise can help some people reduce Fragile X symptoms like anxiety and depression according to some studies as noted by the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.

The genetic condition can cause various challenges, including “intellectual disability, behavioral and learning challenges and various physical characteristics” according to the National Fragile X Foundation. This syndrome is also commonly co-diagnosed with autism, according to their website.

The condition can cause anxiety in women, which has been decreased through the exercise work Caroline began with her parents Will and Laurie Bridges.

“We never exercised before, and she’s never had any desire to do so. I think because it was hard for her until we started going to Orange Theory,” Laurie said.

Had it not been for Caroline seeing the fitness gym while out with her mom, they may have never thought about it.

“We passed by and didn’t know what it was,” Caroline said.

“Yeah, it popped up in a shopping center near where we live, and we were in the car one day and (said) ‘I wonder what that Orange Theory place is,’” Laurie said.

They went home to research what the fitness gym was and found out about the option for a free class, so all three went in 2018. While they started at about one or two days a week, they now all have unlimited plans and continue to use it as part of Caroline’s health and support for her condition.

The family moved to Kingwood in 2006 when Caroline was three years old and her younger brother Clark was an infant. Will said they moved to the area for a job change from Lousiana. Caroline is now a senior at Kingwood High School after growing up in the area for most of her life.

“We’ve enjoyed living in Kingwood and been completely a part of the community,” Will said.

The exercises at Orange Theory Fitness include cardio like treadmill and rowing machines and strength training for 60 minutes classes.

Coaches have been able to support Caroline by correcting her movements if she is doing something out of proper form or offer alternatives to the first exercise if needed.
