Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Offers Exercise Program for Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease Leave a comment

FANWOOD/SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA will be offering its Parkinson’s Network Foundation Class starting this April. The first 4-week mini session of the program, which is open to both Y members and the community, will be held from April 6-29.

The class lays a base for individuals with Parkinson’s who are newcomers to Parkinson’s Disease exercise. This class incorporates exercises that target improving specific deficits with emphasis on strength, balance and flexibility. In addition, the exercises are enhanced by including cognition, voice and fun.

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, exercise is a vital component for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease to maintain balance, mobility and activities of daily living. Research has shown individuals with Parkinson’s Disease who start exercising earlier and a minimum of 2.5 hours a week, experience a slowed decline in quality of life compared to those who start later. Establishing early exercise habits is essential to overall disease management, the Foundation states.

Throughout the month of April, the Y’s classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:15am. The program is free for members of the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA, and for community members is $25 for one (1) class per week for the 4-weeks ($50 for 2 classes per week for 4 weeks). The 4-week session will be followed by a longer 8-week session. The classes will be held in small groups inside the Y with updated health and safety procedures in place.
